Little Chinese Readers LLC (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates www.littlechineselearners.com (the “Site”) and the services offered through it (the “Services”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

Information We Collect

We may collect the following about you or, where you are a parent/guardian, about your child:

• Name
• Email address
• Location data (general, e.g. country/region)
• Age and role (parent, teacher, student)
• Learning progress: lessons and courses accessed or completed, quiz/assignment results
• Usernames created for children/students
• Payment information, processed by our payment processor (see Payment Processing below)

We collect this in three ways: information you give us directly (e.g. at signup or checkout), information collected automatically through your use of the Services (e.g. cookies, IP address, browser/device type, pages viewed), and information from third parties who help us operate the Services.

Cookies

We use cookies and similar technologies to operate the Site, remember your preferences, and understand how the Services are used. Cookie consent on this Site is managed through CookieYes.

Do Not Track

We do not currently respond to “Do Not Track” browser signals.

Why We Use Your Information

• To provide and maintain the Services, including delivering course content and tracking learning progress
• To manage accounts, including parent/child account relationships
• To process orders and payments
• To communicate with you about your account or your child’s use of the Services
• To send marketing and promotional communications (with the ability to opt out at any time)
• To analyze usage trends and improve our Services
• To comply with legal obligations

Payment Processing

If you purchase a membership, your payment is processed by Stripe. Depending on the payment method selected, we or Stripe may transmit your name, email, IP address, and billing information as necessary to process the transaction and prevent fraud. Stripe’s own privacy practices govern their handling of this data. PayPal is occasionally made available as a payment method upon request; where used, PayPal’s own privacy practices govern their handling of your information.

Sharing and Disclosure of Information

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information in the following circumstances:

• With a parent, teacher, or school administrator, to allow them to monitor a child’s or student’s progress on the Services
• With service providers who help us operate the Site (e.g. hosting, email delivery, payment processing), solely to perform those services on our behalf
• Where required by law, subpoena, court order, or other legal process
• To protect the rights, property, or safety of us, our users, or others
• In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of business assets
• As aggregated or de-identified information that does not identify you individually

How Long We Retain Information

We retain personal information only as long as necessary to provide the Services and for as long as an account remains active, unless a longer period is required by law (e.g. tax or accounting requirements). When information is no longer needed, we will delete or anonymize it, or, where immediate deletion is not possible (e.g. backup archives), securely isolate it until deletion is possible.

Children’s Privacy

We value the privacy of children and comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) with respect to children under the age of 13 in the United States (“child” or “children”). To permit a child to access our Services, a parent or teacher must create a primary account and then add the child to that account.

Information We Collect About Children: We collect information about children directly from children; from parents and teachers; and automatically through a child’s use of the Services.

• If a child accesses our Services without a paid membership, we do not knowingly require or collect personal information directly from the child.
• If a child accesses our Services under a paid membership, a parent or teacher must first create the child’s account, including a username, before the child can access the full Learning Experiences. We encourage parents and teachers to create anonymous usernames for their child rather than the child’s full or real name.
• Regardless of membership level, if a child nonetheless provides us with personal information directly (such as a name or username), we will collect it. We encourage parents and teachers to educate children about limiting the personal information they provide online, including to us.

Information We Collect Automatically: we automatically collect information about a child’s use of the Services through cookies and similar technologies, including domain name, browser and device type, pages viewed, links clicked, session length, and referring URL. We may also collect IP address and other identifiers, and information about a child’s activity within the Services (such as lessons accessed, quiz results, and progress), which we link back to the parent’s or teacher’s account email address so we can provide personalized progress feedback to the account holder.

How We Use and Disclose Children’s Information: we use children’s information to provide and tailor the Services and respond to requests. We do not send marketing communications to, or otherwise market or advertise to, children under 13. We do not sell or rent children’s personal information to third parties, and do not permit third parties to use it for marketing purposes. We do not enable children to make their personal information publicly available through the Services. We may otherwise disclose children’s information only as described in “Sharing and Disclosure of Information” above.

Parents’ Rights: a parent or teacher may review, update, or delete the information we hold about their child by logging into their account, or by contacting us at nihao@littlechineselearners.com with their name, their child’s username, and a clear description of the requested action. We will respond as soon as reasonably practicable. Copies of updated or deleted information may remain viewable in cached or archived pages for a period of time. A parent or teacher may also stop all collection of their child’s information at any time by canceling their account.

Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

• Be informed of how your personal information is used
• Access the personal information we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate or incomplete information
• Request deletion of your information (“right to be forgotten”)
• Restrict or object to certain processing of your information
• Opt out of automated decision-making or profiling

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We will respond as required by applicable law; in some cases, honoring a request may require restricting or terminating access to the Services.

International Data Transfers (GDPR)

If you access the Services from outside the United States, including from the European Union, your information may be transferred to and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate. Where required, we rely on appropriate legal safeguards for such transfers.

Security

We use commercially reasonable measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit, firewalls, and regular security scanning. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a security incident compromises your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

Dispute Resolution and Governing Law

Any dispute arising out of or relating to this Privacy Policy is subject to the arbitration provisions set out in our Terms of Use.

This Privacy Policy is governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except where superseded by the arbitration provisions referenced above.

The Services may contain links to third-party websites or services not operated by us. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties, and we encourage you to review their privacy policies before providing any information to them.
